Position Description

TITLE:                                  School Nurse Assistant

TYPE OF POSITION:         Part-Time (7 hours/day - can be flexible), 2020-2021 school year; salary $25.00-$30.00/hour

LOCATION:                        Hopkinton Public Schools, Hopkinton, Massachusetts

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: All qualified candidates 

The School Nurse Assistant handles administrative and simple medical responsibilities under the direction of a licensed, registered school nurse. Duties include providing first aid for injuries, recording symptoms of sick students, administering doctor-approved medication to students, providing emergency care when necessary, and keeping records of each student who visits the nurse’s office.  The School Nurse Assistant works under the direction of the School Nurse and reports to the principal and the Director of Student Services. 

DUTIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Administers doctor-approved medication to students, and keeps records of each student who visits the nurse’s office;
  2. Assists School Nurse with direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with school district policies, professional standards of practice, physician’s orders, and the Individual Health Plan;
  3. Administers basic health care and First Aid for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children;
  4. Assists School Nurse with collaboration with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information and complying with legal requirements;
  5. Other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must have the following:

  1. Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN);
  2. Certified as CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross;
  3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults;
  4. Commitment to remain current in field knowledge, evaluation and counseling strategies;
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state licensure requirements.
