Position Description

JOB TITLE: Crisis Stabilization Program Manager-RN

FLSA STATUS: Exempt 

SHIFT: Variable Hours

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for supervising the provision of all nursing care provided on the Crisis Stabilization Unit, adhering to psychiatric nursing standards and agency policies and procedures. Assures that nursing care is based on a holistic theoretical approach which includes addressing self-care limitations in behavior and interpersonal functioning. Assumes responsibility for the supervision of all registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and health care technicians in the delivery of nursing care for facility patients. Interacts with licensing and accrediting agencies, family members, other healthcare delivery organizations, and establishes collegial relationships with all healthcare team members within the agency. Directly supervises the Charge Nurses on each shift.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides on call coverage as scheduled; Provides on-site coverage as needed
  • Directs activities necessary for the efficient functioning of all systems and personnel on the units. Supervises the development and implementation of nursing care plans for patients with complex psychiatric/substance abuse problems. Coordinates resources from other disciplines and departments in the delivery of care.
  • Conducts daily clinical audits of the electronic medical record to ensure documentation remains in compliance with agency guidelines.
  • Monitors failed activity reports daily; ensures that these failed activities are cleared by responsible staff members.
  • Reviews trends in data to focus on and resolve urgent issues, noncompliance issues, and Key Performance Indicators.
  • Track and trend medication errors; produce monthly reports that identify problem areas.
  • Review admissions and bed utilization data; create monthly reports for data tracking.
  • Serves as resource/expert to nursing staff in the provision of care.
  • Makes rounds on each unit to assess staffing patterns and patient acuity. Adjusts staffing as needed based on census and acuity.
  • Collaborates with Charge Nurses in managing employee schedules, requests for time off, vacation, holidays, and jury/military duty, etc. in accordance with agency policy.
  • Reviews all critical incidents occurring on the units and determines need for additional staff training, meetings, and/or discussions in order to prevent future incidents; documents all reviews and meetings as well as training records.
  • Assures safety of all patients, staff and family members; reports and documents any safety hazards immediately to appropriate agency department.
  • Develops agenda and conducts Charge Nurse meetings and all staff meetings.
  • Collaborates with the Charge Nurses in the interviewing process of nursing and technician personnel.
  • Conducts performance evaluations for the Charge Nurses; approaches evaluations from a framework of constructive discussion about strengths as well as areas needing improvement with documented evidence of examples of strengths and improvement areas. Assists employees in identifying goals for performance improvement each year and includes with formal evaluation.
  • Ensures that Charge Nurses are conducting performance evaluations of their assigned nursing and technician staff.
  • Conducts and documents progressive disciplinary action for all nursing staff in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates content and delivery of new nursing employee orientation; develops training programs/classes/seminars based on employee needs. Works in collaboration with staff development department to assure ongoing learning needs of employees are being met. Assures attendance of staff at all mandatory compliance training programs.
  • Develops and implements nursing quality improvement projects that are data driven. Project findings are documented with recommendations clearly identified and sent to agency leadership team.
  • Actively participates on nursing and agency committees; verbalizes knowledge of professional topics and is willing to take on committee tasks as needed.
  • Provides nursing leadership to nursing staff by being an effective change agent and guiding staff through program modifications.
  • Delegates duties and responsibilities to Charge Nurses to ensure that all program policies and directives are initiated and adhered.
  • Coordinates the placement and experiences of nursing students assigned to the units in collaboration with their instructors.
  • Communicates effectively with other agency departments and programs to obtain services and resources that are needed for patient care.

 KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, methods and techniques in all areas of psychiatric nursing; knowledge of communicable diseases and infection control procedures that must be practiced by all nursing staff.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate psychiatric care delivery related to personality characteristics, physical growth, psychosocial and cognitive development and spirituality.
  • Knowledge and skills to develop clinical programming, unit schedules and staff duties for programming in collaboration with medical and social work directors.

 SKILLS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiar with computer hardware and software including Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), e-mail, fax, and scanning.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to actively participate in the budget preparation process as well as ongoing monitoring of costs against budget projections.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1.  Education – Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  2. Licensure/Certification – Georgia License as Registered Nurse Professional
  3. Experience – Minimum three-years (3) of management/supervisory experience and three-year’s experience in the behavioral health field.
  4. Other - Criminal background check clearance, official academic transcripts, valid driver’s license/ID drug screen, TB test

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Education - Master Degree in Nursing, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with master’s degree in other behavioral health science will be considered.
  2. Licensure/Certification – Georgia License as Registered Nurse Professional
  3. Experience – Minimum four (4) years of management/supervisory experience, four years of behavioral health experience and two years of experience in Behavioral Health Crisis Services.
